Frank Lampard on Coventry's Premier League Return: 'We Can Be a Great Story'
Frank Lampard led Coventry City back to the Premier League after 25 years. On promotion, embracing the underdog tag and the season ahead, here is the manager in his own words.

Every promotion has a manager at the centre of it, and for Coventry City that man is Frank Lampard. He guided the Sky Blues to automatic promotion and a first Premier League season in 25 years — and, as the top flight comes back into view, he has been reflecting on how far the club has come and how much harder the road now gets.
Frank Lampard is Coventry City's manager. He led the club to automatic promotion in 2025/26, ending a 25-year absence from the Premier League. He is approaching the top flight with belief, realism and an embrace of the underdog role.
Promotion earned the hard way
Coventry did not scramble up through the play-offs. They sealed automatic promotion with games to spare, and for Lampard it ranks among the proudest moments of a career spent at the very top of the game.
“I'm proud. Sometimes, all managers talk about the players, but I am proud, and I'm proud of myself, the staff and the boys.”
He was quick to point out that even automatic promotion had not been the stated goal at the start of the campaign — the standards simply rose as the season went on.
“Automatic promotion wasn't in our plan. We sat down in the summer, we talked about how perfect can the season be.”
Embracing the underdog
Rather than shy away from expectations of a difficult year, Lampard has leaned into them. His pitch to the players is simple: nobody expects anything, so play with freedom and belief.
“Underdog stories are always great stories. If we have that resilience, I believe in the talent of the team. I think we can be a team that surprises people.”
Calm in the dugout
A playing career at Chelsea and management jobs at Derby, Chelsea and Everton have taught Lampard how to steady a dressing room through the highs and lows. He sees emotional control as one of his most important jobs.
“You give off a nice feeling of calmness to the players and they trust that you're the boss.”
Keeping Coventry special
For all the ambition, Lampard keeps returning to the club's identity and its supporters, who stuck with the Sky Blues through some very lean years on the way back up.
“It needs to remain a special place because it's been an incredibly supported club in the city, the tradition and history.”
Arsenal away? 'Typical'
The fixture computer handed Coventry the champions, away, under the Friday-night lights for their first game back. Lampard's reaction summed up his sense of humour — and his relish for the stage.
“Arsenal on a Friday night with the world watching us? That's a great way to start it for us.”
